Pairing Meta: The Appeal of Snake/Otacon from a Male Perspective

Sep 11, 2008 10:06

Whilst I am still working on my second story (thanks to Khronos_Keeper and Imre_Nico for agreeing to be my beta-buddies), I decided to do something I promised to do for a long time: an essay about Snake/Otacon slash from a male perspective. I managed to write this pretty quickly, so if you need clarification/elaboration/etc, feel free to ask.

I certainly think it does. If you make a list of eccentric or otherwise socially challenged characters you're going to get pretty much all males. Sure you have the sort of quirky, clumsy female character sometimes (ala Bridget Jones) but not to the level of somebody like Otacon. Otacon insists that he functions on a more logical level than most people, and says he likes computers better than people.

I've never encountered a female character like this, which is a real shame because it's a sentiment I relate to. A woman is expected to have social graces and emotional empathy, and it doesn't compute that they might not, except maybe for being shy, but that's not the same thing. For guys, that kind of thing is almost expected to some degree ("Hey I don't understand my girlfriend and all her feelings" type of thing).

That's sort of a personal rant for me though and I could go on about it for days. I tend to make eccentric fictional characters into personal heroes and it frustrates me to no end that all of them are male. (List includes: Sherlock Holmes, Ford Prefect and Nero Wolfe, as examples)

Thanks for your contribution. I'd certainly like to hear you elaborate more on the subject when you have time. Hell, do a female counterpart to my above piece, lol. But really, I'm actually glad some females have found that elements of my theory are applicable to them.

Well the are.

We just wish you hadn't said "MALE perspective" in your title, basically.

Just... advice for the future, there.
