Jack left on a warm May night. He said there was something he had to do. Someone he had to repay. There was nothing for Rosemary to do but wait. Wait and hope. Hope that Jack would be safe. Hope that he would come home again.
So when there was a knock at the door one June night, Rose jumped up as fast as she could and ran to the door.
But it wasn’t Jack standing there, but an older man. Roy Campbell. The real Roy Campbell. She had come to know him over time after The Big Shell. It wasn’t unusual to see him lately, as he had taken it upon himself to check up on Rose from time to time, with her being pregnant and alone.
“Oh, hello Roy.” Rose tried not to let the disappointment she always felt when it wasn’t Jack at the door reach her voice. She opened the door wider and stepped aside, inviting him inside.
With a brief thank you, Campbell stepped inside, taking off his jacket and hanging it on a nearby hook before.
“How have you been, Rosemary?” It was a familiar greeting from him.
“I’ve been fine. The doctor said that everything is running smoothly,” She laughed a little, “Although I need to eat more.”
Roy chuckled, but the smile did not reach his eyes. He made his way into the living room, sitting down on the couch there. Rose followed him in, but she hovered in the doorway. The way he was acting was making her nervous. As if he was about to tell her something horrible.
“Have you heard anything?” Rose asked. Campbell had contacts everywhere, so any news she got would come from him.
A pause, “There’s something I need to talk to you about.”
There it was. Something was wrong. Wordlessly, Rosemary crossed the room, sitting down on the chair opposite him.
“The leader of the group Paradise Lost has been in contact with Jack.”
“Paradise Lost?” Rose shook her head, not understanding where Campbell was going with this. But there had been news from Jack! At the very least, it meant that he was still alive somewhere.
“An anti-Patriot group. They made a deal with Jack. In exchange for the information Jack has, they are going to supply him with the location of where Olga Gurlukovich’s child is being held.” Campbell looked at Rosemary, his old eyes staring intently, “He’s going to be fighting against the Patriots again.”
She felt her heart drop. Jack would be running back into danger, and there was nothing she could do for him. Nothing but stay home and hope.
“This puts you in danger again. And your baby.” Campbell rubbed his brow tiredly, but never broke his eye contact. Upon seeing Rose’s confused expression, he continued. “Olga was manipulated by the Patriots because they stole her child upon birth. If the Patriots get a hold of you or your baby, you can be used against Jack in the same way.”
Rose’s stomach knotted hearing that. She hadn’t thought of that. Yes there was the obvious danger Jack would face going back on a mission, but not only could she not help, but she might be used against him.
“But… is there anywhere safe to go?” She tried to keep her voice steady. To stay strong.
“No.” Campbell shook his head. “But I have a proposal for you.” He smiled a little wistfully at his wording, before continuing to tell Rose his solution.
She continued to listen, feeling numb as he explained his plan. If she married Campbell, she would no longer hold any leverage as a hostage. With all of the time they had been spending together lately, few would question them becoming a couple. Her pregnancy was still early enough, and Campbell had been around long enough that with the help of the hospital Roy had arranged they could have the official records say that her child with Jack had died, and the baby that would be born would be Campbells’. Jack, of course, would be lied to, just like everyone else. He couldn’t know the truth, because if he knew, then the Patriots could find out, and it would all be for nothing.
By the time Campbell was done, there were tears streaming down Rose’s eyes. Her heart was breaking. She had promised Jack… promised him that she wouldn’t lie to him anymore, not after how she had betrayed him before. Even if he came back alive… It wouldn’t be the same; he wouldn’t want anything to do with her. The images of the family she had wanted to have with Jack were quickly fading away. But… it was the only way.
In order to save her family, she would have to give it up.
So, with a heavy heart, she looked back up, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand.
“Tell me what I have to do…”
