I like the way this guy writes, nice and short.

Catullus wrote a short little poem dubbed "Poem 85".

Here's the Poem.

"I hate and love. Perhaps you ask why I do it?
I do not know but I feel it being done and it is
excruciating." (Catullus 1-3)

I love it because I can describe what this poem means to me in my own opinion however I want. There's no wrong answer (for the most part). Because this poem is so old and can probably be interpreted in so many ways, what makes my way any different? It's so short and lacks any backing details that could pinpoint and narrow down what the author might be trying to say.
The first sentence is a short statement that has a broad meaning, the second sentence is a question, which I find to be filler. The last sentence he says he doesn't know and that this sucks (in the tiniest nutshell ever).

Perhaps he's referring to how love and hate can bring so much pain, and we can't avoid it. Sometimes we might love something so much, and have no idea until that something is taken away in some form or fashion, and leaves us with nothing but pain, confusion, and a feeling of emptiness. Then because of that feeling we learn to hate what took away our love, where as hate just brings more pain and frustration.
