And you know it's time to go
Through the sleet and driving snow
Across the fields of mourning
Light in the distance
- A Sort of Homecoming, U2
An old college friend came home last month to wait for her mom to pass on. Last Sunday, her mom died at 55. She died of cancer (not sure which type). It was expected and the family had months to prepare. Still, it's different when it happens and tears are inevitable.
In the time my friend was back, friends visited, took her out and helped with preparations. When we'd go out, discussions were kept light, checking our maturity at the door and doing a good amount of reminiscing. Back to a point in our lives where we had more in common and life was simpler. Old nicknames resurfaced as did old loves and bloopers. We reserved serious talk for smaller groups.
It was good to see everyone again and I think it provided a brief distraction from the purpose of my friend's visit.
