What a fabulous story, but so, so sad in the end. Poor Napoleon... I wonder if he will try to seek out the 'new' Illya, just to make sure he's okay.

Sad, though...? From the viewpoint of poor Napoleon having to face life without his partner--perhaps with a new partner, and all the while wondering if Illya's 'new' life has made him content; yes, sad and unsettling.

But... what if Illya (with the help of an eiditic memory) faces the painful physical and emotional trauma of the accidents, of losing his wife, of eventually going through whatever he has to go through all over again... to eventually meet up with his partner, just like before--like it was meant to be! (And with perhaps the foreknowledge of the weird Thrugh scientist, so he wouldn't have to go through the time machine anyway...?) Then, more of a happy ending!

It's up to the reader to decide...

I always enjoy stories that make me think and wonder about what happens next. This was one of those! I'm still thinking about it...
