Napoleon Solo stood nearly at attention in front of the seated Mr. Waverly.
“Is it true, sir?” he asked.
Mr. Waverly looked up and said sadly, “Yes, Mr. Solo it is.”
Napoleon’s shoulders sagged slightly.
“Just as capriciously as Mr. Kuryakin was given to UNCLE, he is being taken away. We were very fortunate to have him as long as we did,” Mr. Waverly said as he tamped tobacco into his pipe.
“Aren’t there some strings you can pull sir?”
Mr. Waverly looked up from lighting his pipe and said. “Oh rest assured Mr. Solo, I have pulled any string I could find and called in any and all markers that I had, but to no avail.”
“I see, sir.” Napoleon said as he reached in to his coat and withdrew his Walther. He unloaded the magazine and placed the weapon on the table. He then placed his ID card and triangular badge next to it. “I wish to formally submit my resignation from UNCLE, sir.”
Mr. Waverly puffed a few moments on his pipe and replied. “Ah, I was rather expecting that, Mr. Solo.”
“You did sir?” Napoleon said with some surprise.
”Yes, Mr. Solo. I have known for sometime now that you and Mr. Kuryakin are partners in more than one sense. You know that I disapprove of liaisons between agents. You and Mr. Kuryakin have been exceedingly discreet and I am certain that no one else knows. And I believe that your closeness has only benefited your abilities as agents.”
“Thank you sir,” Napoleon said quietly.
“And while I can accept your resignation, with great sorrow I might add, I am afraid that Mr. Kuryakin will not have such an easy course.”
“Sir?”
“Mr. Solo, whereas Mr. Kuryakin can be released from UNCLE, he is still under the ‘control’ of the Kremlin. I am not sure that they will let him go without a fight.”
“I guess I never thought about that, sir.”
“There is a possibility, Mr. Solo. You could go to ground, as it were.”
Solo’s eyes brightened as the light slowly dawned on him.
Mr. Waverly continued. “All UNCLE would have on record is that the Chief Enforcement Agent Napoleon Solo resigned. It is a big continent, you know.”
Napoleon smiled, "Yes sir. It is indeed.”

Sometime later, Napoleon was at his apartment and following Illya around as he gathered his belongings. Illya still kept his small place in the Village for appearance sake, but had lived with Napoleon for some time.
“Napoleon, you do not understand. I must go back to Russia. The Kremlin has ordered it.” Illya said as he opened a drawer and began taking out white shirts and black turtlenecks.
“I have it all figured out. We take the Pursang out for a farewell cruise. We run into a bad storm and we are lost at sea. But we take the motor boat back to some lonely beach and just disappear,” Napoleon said excitedly.
“You would never give up Pursang like that.”
“Oh, she will eventually come ashore. She is a sea worthy boat. I might get her back if….”
Illya looked at Napoleon and said, “You are serious about this are you not?”
Napoleon placed his hands on Illya’s shoulders. “Yes. I can give her up, but I am not sure I could live if I knew I would never see you again.”
Illya shook his head. “Technically, I am still in the Russian Navy. I would be labeled a deserter.”
“DD”
“What?”
“Discharged dead.”
A small smile appeared on Illya’s lips as he said, “Do you know Napoleon, this just may work.”
