Although he may have been in silly situations, IK/DM generally didn't do silly for posed photos.
I have a photo that I'm guessing was from early season one that is a candid shot. DM was shirtless and so painfully thin you can see his ribs (it had to have been before he filmed of ATWUTS). He was laughing at a soaking wet RV who was clowning for the photo. That sort of photo is a rare find.
But it makes him more human, and more likeable. He's got the same silly grin here that my older brother did when he dumped a bucket of water on my uncle (which started a 10-year "unscheduled" water fight at all our reunions).
It says Shocking, from what I can see of it. RV has his hair parted on the wrong side, so the picture might be flipped. What episode has RV all wet? I can't think of any. I've certainly never seen that hat before except on George Harrison in the movie Help! Do you think they were in the Bahamas? That's where the Beatles made the movie. I wish people wouldn't crop the headlines on these articles.
My guess is this was a pre-production shot on Hong Kong Shilling. RV was on that paddlewheel boat that MGM had docked on Lot 3 (the boat was usually docked in that "waterfront" area of Lot 3 where scenes in Thor and Summit Five were filmed).
As I recall, he jumped into the water (someone jumped into the water for him). The hat that DM wore in the filmed version of HK Shilling was different, though.
I can think of three or four eps when RV was soaked, and this photo looks nothing like any of them, were Ultimate Computer (when RV was "Toomey" and lost his mustache), Take Me To Your Leader, and Prince of Darkness. DM had also filled out a bit by the time those eps were filmed.
I don't think they were in the Bahamas. Early on, Arena Production was having trouble with getting paid for eps by NBC, so the first season budget wouldn't have covered that sort of expense.
HKShilling sounds right. The hat works for that as well, even if it's a different one. And DMc might have been in that one originally, perhaps a change of some sort. Poor thing, I've always figured they didn't want him stripped down simply because he was so thin; not exactly the image they wanted to portray. I guess they sent him to the gym after they figured out what a phenom he was turning into.
I do have the heitland book, although I haven't actually read it. I'll go looking for pictures :D DMc talks often about having had a 'caved chest', as he puts it, and not very attractive (in his estimation). I remember reading a quote from a friend of George Harrison about not wanting to be seen without his shirt on because he was so thin. I've often thought that might have been the case with DMc, and certainly a consideration by the studio when promoting a 'sex symbol'. He's adorable no matter how thin he is, or bulked up or ... no complaints ever.

So, I have to say, I love that photo.

I can't figure out which ep this relates to; he seemed to have filled out nicely for ATWUTS in the summer of '65.
