I missed the exact centenary.

I thought I would mention grandfathers here as many of you have service connections.

Earlier this year was the centenary of the German Spring Offensive in the Great War. OH's grandfather was captured during this and spent the last few months of the war as a prisoner of the Germans. On the night before, when they knew that the morning would bring death or capture they removed the badges from their uniforms. This was standard practice, I believe, to give as little information to the enemy about troop dispositions. And I gather he was part of a team of snipers and didn't want that known.

Nandy (as he was known in the family) was born in 1896 and this is the earliest photo we have of him. It was most probably taken sometime around his marriage in 1920.

My grandfather was slightly younger, he was born in 1900. I don't have many photos of my family, but what we do have is the form applying for his birth certificate so that he could leave elementary school aged 14 and go to work in a factory.
