I see it in all my fandoms, so it's not just an UNCLE phenomenon. I think a lot of it is because the shows deal with men who are taking risks (MFU, Pros, Star Trek,) so it's natural to continue to place them in similar situations. Plus, yes, it's an easy trope to fall back on.
Simple answer: it's a way of them showing affection for each other.
Slash with no sex, not even a hint.
Way back when, men "didn't" show their emotions, stiff upper lip, boys don't cry, etc. But, men could always show fear, concern, "love", for a battle companion. Hurt/comfort = fandom's solution.
Lord God, 15 degrees out there, MUST I go into Ackerman today? Sighn.
I don't know why I always give Illya grief. I'd like to say it's because he's the risk taker , but I don't think that's it for me. Back when I wrote Torchwood fic, I would beat Ianto up all the time. He was my favourite, but in the beginning of the show he was the one who stayed behind while the others took the risk.
I think a part of it is our need to take care of them. In order to that we have to hurt them first. I suppose it could be the fanfic form of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy.
sparky955 said what I wanted to say! Hurt/comfort is a great fanfic equation as long as they balance out. Don't give me all hurt with no follow up of comfort and affection.
