Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, of Germany, has been elected pope. May Benedict XVI emulate his immediate namesake in acting as a moderating force in the world.
Though I'm afraid that I soon will long for the halcyon days of John Paul II's papacy. Roman Catholicism could be headed for a split not seen since the days of Martin Luther, with his 95 Theses nailed to the door of the Wittenberg Church.
It is heartbreaking to see the direction in which my church and countries--the U.S. and Italy--are headed. Tolerance isn't even a buzzword anymore.
