Me and the war against entropy

I have had a time at work lately getting my people (some of them are twice my age) to understand the value of a strong work ethic. You can't really "teach" some things to people. In this case it becomes necessary to foster a change in culture. My people (like most people in the world) have a sense of entitlement. I need them to know the reason they get paid is to work, not to question whether things are right or wrong or fair or unfair.

I also recognize that I have to make sure things are right and fair for my people. You can't please everyone all the time though and when you make someone mad in a Union environment it can take 6 hours of meetings to straighten out the tiniest of problems. I want my people to understand that I have their best interest at heart but I DO have to get all of our work out and the customer's needs take priority over their desires.

Last night before I left I took a few minutes to make sure that the work assignments were in place for the next day in advance. The morning manager usually takes care of this but I have noticed a trend where they are going out later and later. It is not fair to say anything bad about the morning manager. She is fantastic, but nevertheless the commitments we have had added to our schedules from staff and reports and structures that we have now that we didn't before have pushed her ability to get the assignments out to people quickly and I have a hunch that slight dis-orginization is causing us trouble with meeting our commitments as a group. I am hopeful that today we will see a significant improvement in our work output.

Recognizing that I just typed some of the most banal information on the planet I will now discuss something a little less so. VACATION!!!

It is the time of year when we select vacation for the next year. I am planning on making a trip to FL to see in-laws for Thanksgiving and maybe a trip to Maryland in the spring to see my grandparents and show off the great grandchild, but other than that I have no firm plans. If anyone has suggestions on something fun and not TOO expensive I would love to know about it. Maybe the beach or a camping trip. I get 19 days of vacation a year so use them wisely....

:)

Have a great day!

vacation, work
