Studio 60

For more info, see Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip

The beginning starts out with news of a religious skit being shut down. And Wes, the guy whose show it is, gets on stopping the current skit and talks about corporate tv failing, turning from "cutting edge political and social satire" to basically snuff porn.

Then we meet Jordan who is just starting with NBS (which airs Studio 60) as President when her phone rings...first day on the job. And then everyones phone rings.

(Tommy Schlamme!!)

Then we get a war room of everyone debating how to cover it up, how to deal, and Jordan's clearly got her head on straight. I love that we totally see Aaron Sorkin's liberal leanings. But he's so right. I mean, even when I like a certain President or something, if the jokes good--I like it. And it does make us pause. Satire is wonderful and shouldn't be shut down because someone may be offended. It serves its purpose.

Jordan suggests hiring Danny and Matt who are talented and can bring the show (network) back on track. Trying to incourage classiness.

(A preview for All The King's Men which I am dying to see)

Next we meet Matt (Matthew Perry--and what's up with the double name?) and Danny (Bradley Whitford) at the 2006 Writer's Guild Awards (for which Matt wins the main award). Brad's got his glasses down on his nose. So cute!! Poor Matt's hyped up on vicadin thanks to back surgery and when he has the spoltlight on Danny to thank him...no ones there cause Danny's gotten the call from Studio 60. He asks the award girl--you see there's no one else there either, right? LOL

Then we meet Harriet and Cal Shanley (Timothy Busfield) who is angsting about his job as he kept the live feed going on Wes in the beginning, despite a network guy yelling at him to cut. Everyone at this party gets called back to the studio.

(The first commercial for Victoria's Secret Very Sexy make up I've ever seen, despite using it for 2 years now)

We zoom in on Danny watching the footage with his glasses on his nose. GUH. Jordan has come to visit him. She asks him and Matt to start ASAP to run Studio 60. Danny says NO. He tries to back out by saying they're doing a movie, but it seems he's failed a drug test. He goes to tell Matt and it seems he was positive for cocaine. Matt says he'll pay bond. Matt says they'll make budget cuts--move to Vancouver. Danny says no, not ever. Vancouver doesn't even look like Vancouver. Vancouver looks like Boston, CA. Hahaha--considering all my favorite shows were/are shot there (minus West Wing) this cracked me up. Cause it's SO TRUE (even when the place doesn't look like what they want it to look like either--like Chicago on SPN).

Matt bursts into the room rather incensed. Asks an entire group if they're using Danny's failed test to blackmail and cover up what happened. No one knew but Jordan. Whoops. We see Jordan, Matt and Danny and a few others meeting (big wigs including Jack)--Cal Shanley is watching outside the door in the shadows. Matt says we'll do it, I'll bring Danny around, despite you having us fired before (but it turns out they quit). Jordan has this great dry wit.

Matt has everyone paged to the stage. On the way, Matt meets Harriet (they broke up recently) and they duke it out. It seems she's very much a Christian and sang for Pat Robertson, whom Matt thinks is a biggot. They seem to agree they can't get over that, but he still says he's looking forward to working with her.

Matt and Danny are talking, about Danny's problem. He's back in meetings and everything now. Matt asks why Danny didn't tell him. Poor Matt's still hopped up though and making fun of it. It seems the Christian sketch was written by Matt four years ago before quitting. Jordan tells him its the opening of next week. Matt is excited and I think a bit flattered. Danny approaches Cal. Cal says he did leave Wes on. They ask Cal to stay. Danny says if Cal had left Wes on for 54 instead of 53 seconds, they would have given him a raise.

Matt and Danny talk about how the studio's nice and with a good history. Danny says good, cause we live here now. Then they walk onto stage with the waiting staff who cheer (in a very much Sorkin/Tommy shot, the bright blue and lights).

That last scene...I can already see the slashers going. A nice friendly gaze between the two and a hand on the back. Very sweet.

(Preview for Man of the Year which I want to see even more than the last one I mentioned)

MY THOUGHTS:
So it didn't blow me away, but it was great in a subtle way. Humorous, intriguing, and powerful messages as is Sorkin's specialty. I will definately keep watching. Brad was amazing, and I can tell Danny is going to be just as deep as Josh was on West Wing. Promising show, indeed. I also loved the music. Upbeat, totally different from the orchestral pieces of West Wing, but very apt for the show.
