Keep calm and end this meme

Melvin Martin Milton never thought he would be the face of addiction. He never thought he would know what rock bottom felt like for an addict. But there he was, rock bottom, addicted, and possibly the saddest he had ever felt in his life.

1. Coconut Cream
2. Lemon Meringue
3. Apple
4. Peach
5. Pecan

It all started innocently enough-a link shared by a friend on LiveJournal. It always seems to start that way-some so-called friend, innocently sharing a little something, harmless, unassuming, just once, and just for fun.

1. Freddy Mercury
2. Eliot Smith
3. Isaac Brock
4. That guy from The National
5. Jeff Tweedy

But it all seemed to just snowball-more sharing, more links, more time…

1. Slackjaw
2. Journey to the End of the Night
3. Bluebeard
4. Tropic of Capricorn
5. Galapagos

And when things started to fall apart, well, that snowballed too. Melvin got caught doing it at work. He never thought to hide it from his wife, Mira, (he didn’t think it was that big a deal), but over time, she started to give him looks. He got caught at work again. He started hiding it from his wife.

1. Kurt Vonnegut
2. Louis Ferdinand Celine
3. Jim Knipfel
4. Henry Miller
5. John Barth

He became neglectful-of his kids (Maranda, Miles, and Melvin Martin, Jr.), his wife, and his duties at work.

1. A.R. Ammons
2. William Matthews
3. Heather Christle
4. Keetje Kuipers
5. Franz Wright

Things continued to fall apart. Melvin lost his job after getting caught doing it in a meeting about a deal he had neglectfully let fall through.

1. Bread and Circuses
2. The Conscience of the King
3. The Naked Time
4. A Piece of the Action
5. The Trouble with Tribbles

His kids grew to hate him after so many missed soccer games, school recitals, and broken promises. His wife filed for divorce (they hadn’t had sex in nearly a year).

1. The Empire Strikes Back
2. A New Hope
3. Return of the Jedi
4. Revenge of the Sith
5. The Phantom Menace

He became alienated from everyone he knew. His finances had completely crumbled. This was it, he was nearing the end-rock bottom.

1. Index
2. Thumb
3. Pinky
4. Middle
5. Ring

Melvin couldn’t remember the final break. Occasionally, he had lucid moments when a memory would float up-the men in the white coats, a struggle, and a sharp jab in his neck… And that was it-his end, his rock bottom. The days were all a blur now. Sometimes, he would look up at the computer screen, and see a window. He’d look down at the keyboard, and see his fingers tapping the sill, and then it was a keyboard again, and Melvin was typing…

1. Thorazine
2. Zyprexa
3. Haldol
4. Depakote
5. Risperdal
