WHAT A GREAT MOVIE.
The score is amazing. There's not a weak link in the score or in the cast (I was expecting Amanda Bynes to be iffy from what people said to me, but I thought she was great!). Nikki Blonsky (sp?) is SO much better vocally than the girl on the B'way recording. The energy is fantastic. Bill said it was the best movie musical he's seen since BLUES BROTHERS.
Queen Latifah will get a best supporting actress nomination, if not for the Oscars, for the Golden Globes (and probably for the Oscars as well). And John Travolta - oh my god, let me just say that he is so convincing as Edna that I said afterwards, "It'll be hard to see who deserves best supporting actress, Queen Latifah or John Travolta - oh wait, he's a MAN, baby!" When he was young and on WELCOME BACK KOTTER, I just couldn't stand him. He was then what Zack Efron is now - a teen idol. I called him John Revolting. SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER didn't change my mind, I hated that movie. But he's changed my mind over the years, grudgingly in GREASE and then in the serious movies he's done since. I flat out loved him in this. And his Baltimore accent was dead-on. Every time he spoke, Bill cracked up. (Why didn't anyone else even try a Bawlmer accent, hon?)
See it. I'm going out to buy the soundtrack today.
