Accident at Home

It's incredible how destiny and fate works. Some simple accidents can lead to the death of a person and in some dramatic accidents, people just come out of them without a single scratch. This comes to mind after the accident I had on friday morning.

As I was getting ready to take a shower and leave for work, the dogs were playing on the roof. I usually keep them in the garden but since the rainy season started, they stayed on the roof where their dog house is. The dog house was built by cassen_grrrl on the roof and the only way to take it to the garden is piece by piece, so well.. it was on the roof. So, friday morning, I was in the bathroom reading a magazine (I don't think I need to explain more), suddenly I heard the sound of glass breaking and in less than a second I got hit by two dogs and a shower of big and small pieces of glass. The bathroom has a skylight, the skylight is exactly above the sink and the toilet. The skylight is comprised of two pieces of glass, the one that broke was exactly above the toilet (I think the size of each glass piece is 8 sq ft). So again, suddenly two dogs fell over me plus pieces of glass, the entire bathroom is covered in big and small pieces of glass and I realized I have started to bleed from my shoulder and I can feel some pain in my back.

Funny thing, my first reaction while the skylight and two dogs are falling over me, is to try to catch the dogs. I really can't remember how they fell over me, but I do remember I almost caught one (Loki) with my arms while the other dog (Thor) just fell over Loki and me. My first reaction is to grab them by their collars so they don't panic and get hurt by all the pieces of glass on the bathroom. Seconds after the crash, my roommate cassen_grrrl comes to the bathroom and is slightly shocked by the scene. I asked her to take the dogs to my room because I could tell they were shaking and probably very nervous, and so I could clean myself. When I stood up from the toilet, I noticed a huge piece of glass that fell and was resting on my back, I just thought that a few inches closer, and it could have ended up buried in my back (or maybe even my head), but it didn't even scratch me.

The rest of the story was uneventful, we checked the dogs and they had very small wounds, I took a quick shower to clean the blood, my roommate did some cleaning to the woulds (alcohol and peroxide), my roommate called my employer to tell them I would not show up today, then we went to the Emergency area of our nearest hospital, got four stitches on each of the three wounds located on my shoulder and back (the smaller wounds in my back didn't need stitches), then buying a shower curtain to cover the skylight on our way back from the hospital as it was still raining and finally taking the dogs to the vet to check on their wounds. Loki needed one stitch and Thor none.

So, what could have been a very nasty accident, ended up fairly well considering. But still, I was thinking that if I had looked up when the glass cracked, I might have ended up with a huge scar on my face or even worse. So again, fate works in weird ways. This kinda things always remind me that scene in "The curious case of Benjamin Button", where Daisy broke her leg just because very specific events happened (the phone call, ... can't recall the others :p) that created the situation where the car hit her and broke her leg. If one of those events didn't happen, she would have been ok (as it's shown on the movie).

Here's a photo of the skylight. The shower curtain is on top of the skylight but you can still see the pieces of glass that are still attached to the skylight frame.
