musings...

I don't plan on giving birth to kids. I have my own in school. I may be a teacher, but in reality I am much more. And I love every minute of it.

My personal version of "I am a teacher"

I am a teacher
I get paid to teach 5 classes from 7:20-2:30, and have vacations and summers off.
I am at school at 7 a.m. and often don't leave until well after 4 p.m.
I spend my preps talking to other teachers to check up on my kids, strategizing with others on how to approach hard-to-reach kids, making appointments and scheduling meetings, and calling parents.
I take 20 minutes of my lunch period to actually sit down and eat, but my mind is still thinking about what needs to be done or what else could be done.

I am a teacher, but I am also a parent
I give them breakfast when they come to school hungry or are in a rush to get to school on time
I give them supplies when then run out or are too embarrassed to ask
I make sure they have time to eat lunch
I keep track of how many times a kid has worn the same outfit
I pay for field trips, juices, and snacks
I give band-aids out for cuts and bruises
I show affection when I am proud of my kids, whether it's a pat on the shoulder or a high-five
On occasion, my kids will give me an unexpected but welcomed hug

I am a teacher, but I am also a psychologist and social worker
I listen when students come to me with problems
I give advice on relationships, on friendships, on respect, and on getting along
I approach the student who is normally bubbly but has become withdrawn
I create groups or partners based on who I know WON'T get along and who would be picked last
I console the student who does not know how to release or show his true emotions
I lead by example and give respect to everyone, even when I am not receiving it.
I check up on "former" students to see how they're doing and offer for them to stop by my room any time.
I say "former" because you know that once you're my student, you're always my student, even when you've graduated high school and come back with your baby.

I am a teacher, but I am also an advocate and friend
I make sure my students are taking the classes they're supposed to be taking
I facilitate reconciliations and agreements between students and teachers
If one of my kids needs something unrelated to my class, and doesn't know where to go, I will send them in the right direction or even go with them.
I speak to my students at their level, not as if they are a child or I am superior
I congratulate them on achievements big and small
I make them laugh when they need to be entertained;
make them smile when they are down
I help them make new friends, make up with old friends, and get over those who weren't friends
I go to their games and meets, and learn the newest dances - because I want to
I am their biggest fan

I am their teacher
