Pain for Art and Pain for Blood

Jessica Lagunas is an artist born in Nicaragua, who grew up in Guatemala. Her art is thoughtful, interesting, and focuses on feminist themes. For example, her series based on Little Red Riding hood, Para verte mejor (To better see you), Para besarte mejor (To better kiss you), and Para acariciarte mejor (To better caress you) underline the pressures women feel to beautify themselves (of which I am also guilty).

I've pictured to nicer ones on here but there's another piece on her website called Retorno al puberdad which is a film of her individually tweezing out all her pubic hair... ouch. Anyway, she also does drawings in perfume, botany sketches with a fashion magazine twist, and lots of things with red pumps so check her out.

And now, (click on picture to go to film home page).

So, I went to watch this last weekend, and it was fantastic. When I say 'fantastic' I'm not exactly talking about the gore... because I must have actually watched the film only about 10% of the time something awful was happening. It's just that the Saw franchise has always made my little head think... it's like Se7en, where the horrible serial killer has deluded himself into thinking he has a moral high ground, that he's absolutely justified in doing what he's doing, and as the audience, you start to see his point of view (okay, I do).

The traps and games in Saw are always tailor-made for the victim, always presenting options - how far would you push yourself? It's a little unfair on some of the people who are just meant to be 'interactive pawns' in someone else's game (like in Saw 3) but still. Also, Jigsaw is always extremely clear about what he wants you to do, but people never seem to learn... Sometimes there's a strange element of poetic justice in what people are put through. I sound so unstable right now haha. I am after all a misanthropist, though you guys don't seem to believe me when I say so.

Uncomfortable images ho!
