summary: drabble. Sasuke pays for his crimes. He pays for the crimes of his family. [au-ish. Post war]
They find you sitting by the mangled corpse of your brother, in the marred terrain of your battle with him.
They find you watching your blood mingle with his, and wondering if that blood was worth killing for.
They find you having killed the last remaining Akatsuki member, and they arrest you on the spot.
Prison leaves much time for reflection, for contemplation, but you’re not sure there’s any point in doing so when you’re going to die in three days anyway. You start to think about Itachi a lot, because you know killing him really didn’t make a difference to anything, but there wasn’t anything else you could have done.
You feel dirty, both literally and figuratively. Memories stick to your mind like scum, and if they weren’t going to decapitate you in three days you’d probably do it yourself.
“Did you really think it would be so easy? Itachi was our double agent, remember?” Naruto says from the other side of the bars. “Did you think you could just wash your hands of it?”
But you didn’t think that, you never thought that. Itachi was your brother, after all.
And blood is so very hard to wash out.
