Weird Coincidences, and Science Marches On

So I'm reading this book, The Water-method Man by John Irving, and the main character is named Fred Trumper. The other day I was listening to "One Night in Bangkok" by Murray Head and noticed some weird chess references in the song, so I wikipedia'd it and discovered it was from the musical Chess, written by Tim Rice and two members of ABBA. The American chess player in the musical is named Freddie Trumper! Weird coincidence, eh?

Exciting news from the research front! I finally get to put aside inorganic synthesis (read: a pain in the ass) for a while while one of UK's old post-docs sets up a matrix isolation system in the laser lab. Molecules freeze onto the matrix at very low temperatures, which leads to very clean, geometry-dependent IR spectra. He needs some help setting it up, and my advisor recommended me to him. YAY!
