... are fantastic movies! Life is Beautiful is now one of my favorite movies. It's the kind of film that is warm and fuzzy, but leaves you with a bittersweet feeling.
The Departed is a great action flick whose plot is unpredictable. Okay, moderately unpredictable - however, your attention is kept by the cleverness of the plot structure. And sure, if you were to say, "Yeah, I knew what would happen after the first 10 minutes," a) good for you, and b)it could have been because I was exhausted from studying for my Math Methods class all week, so I sure as hell couldn't predict it with a freaking equation. Oh, here's one:
Leonardo diCaprio playing an undercover cop + Matt Damon playing the leak in the Mass State Police dept. = action film sweetness!
That was so lame. Anyway, I felt that the movie would have been better if the screenwriters didn't have a rat (the animal) crawling across the screen at the very end, representing that Matt Damon's role in the film (the "rat"/leak.) Although their intention was to wrap up the movie neatly, the imagery did not provide a sense of closure, but rather a factor of corniness. Ugh. I highly dislike it when filmwriters have to drag out scenes. I'd rather have a movie that had the events unfold, then stop abruptly for the audience to figure it the filmwriter's intentions, metaphors, underlying plot, etc. Short and concise is the way to go. I guess you can't expect too much from an action movie. As one facebook group states, "Academia has ruined me for the real world."
Also, I've been debating between going abroad for JYA or staying here and doing research for a thesis. If I go JYA, I could play on their frisbee team, gain worldly experience, and have the time of my life. I would also be able to do research there. But, I wouldn't be able to write a thesis because the research process would stop once I return to the States. On the other hand, I could stay at Smith to do exciting research with my wonderful professor Doreen (lasers! quantam physics!). However, she would be on sabbatical my senior year, i think. So, no thesis oppurtunity.
AHHH. I guess it all depends on what the director of research at st. andrews says.
