I was actually pretty surprised to hear that I had won a small writing contest recently. I didn't even know I had that kind of skill in me!
Anyways, the contest was the Halloween 2008 Funfest at Starmen.net. It's an annual celebration among Earthbound fans for Halloween... and all things Earthbound, of course. The contest gives out prizes in all sorts of artistic medium including Hand Art, Photoshop, Writing, Music, and what have you. There were definitely some spectacular entries this year, especially in the hand art category. I'm no artist, so I decided to give my shot at writing a short story, being an English major and all.
There were several hundred entries this year, many of them quite amazing. Of those, there were about 50 Writing entries. The judging is based on things such as "Halloweeniest" or "Most Earthboundy." I submitted a loosely-tied-to-Earthbound entry called
The Last Bus To Threed, a short little horror story about... well, what the title says. I put a lot of work into it, and it really paid off!
I won first place in the "Halloweeniest" category, which is essentially first place for the entire writing category. Now I get to have my own avatar on the Starmen forums, as well as a
Mani Mani Statuette made by
Camille Young, who is an exceptional clay/sculpey modelling artist. Since only four of these statuettes are being given out, I feel pretty damn proud of myself!
Now if I could just write this essay...
