Game Backstory

The Pittsburgh Steelers, after the career-threatening injury to Tom Brady, were quickly thought to be a Super Bowl favorite, and for the most part, they have not disappointed or wilted in the face of the pressure. In fact, the Steelers have applied some pressure of their own. Their dominant D is Steel Curtain-esque, and while their offense may not be reminiscent of the days when Bettis was around, their passing game comes with a top 5 QB in “Big Ben” Roethlisberger, a future Hall of Fame WR in Hines Ward, and speedster WR Santonio Holmes. HB Willie Parker seems to be recovered from his earlier knee sprain and is back running up to speed. Their team went 13-3 on the regular season, losing only to the Colts, Eagles, and Titans, all playoff teams this year. Moreover, they’ve won big in games they ought to, and won ugly the games that were hotly contested. Second year head coach Mike Tomlin may be a departure from Bill Cowher’s intense disciplinarian style, but he’s still a terrific motivator who has the respect and appretiation of his team. Their journey through the playoffs has been met with tough teams along the way, but they have been able to overcome with their stifling No. 1 ranked defense, and the miraculous Ben Roethlisberger, who despite a pourous O-line, with tackles resembling turnstiles and guards who seemingly get paid by the penalty.
