colouring books for adults. i find it unnerving; we've created such a hostile world for ourselves we've started to regress, retreating back to childhood in order to feel safe again (devo were right all along). it's a comfort blanket. it's a symptom, not a solution. don't get me wrong, i feel these things too. life is more and more a fight against insanity. but you can't just give and up and do colouring in. can you??
There's so much self-medication going on, it scares me. My more principled objection to the colouring book vogue is the way in which it has been linked to the 'mindfulness' thing, which in itself assumes that one should fix oneself within. When so often troubled minds are the result of external pressures which should be addressed - instead of retreating inwards to meditation, we should stand up and fight that which assails us. But that would entail revolution, and anyway, I'm a fine one to talk...
i would say you're one of the best to talk, having been closer to the machinations of the beast than most. and frankly, you saying that i find interesting (and welcome).
yes, self-help books. NO! i wonder how much research has been conducted into the correlation between capitalism and mental illness.
