Assessment, Financial Aid, and Advising

Years after doing the college thing in California I have finally decided to bite the bullet and go back. Having a family and a successful career makes things a little more complicated but Jessica is definitely supportive.

I'm deathly afraid of the Math assessment test, I only took the English Reading Comprehension and Writing assessments, scored a 108 on the comprehension and a 96 on the writing. 80 for the comprehension gets you into the General Studies curriculum, 95 on the writing, I just sneaked by. I believe the writing assessment test needs to be reviewed as I do not believe it is an accurate assessment of ones capability in writing.

Went over to the Financial Aid office, waited in line for about 10 minutes, finally met with this one student advisor who couldn't type on the computer as her nails were too long. I asked her when I will be getting my Master Promisary Note, she said in a few days. A little accuracy would be nice as I still need to pay for my books, and of which I don't have the money to pay for them even after next weeks paycheck. Left unhappy.

Finally, went to the Advising Center, waited patiently for about 45 minutes. I met with my advisor, a very nice gentleman from Poland, whom asked various questions regarding why I am unwilling to transfer my credits from my California schools, told him that when I was 17 and just entering college, my focus was not on education but on everything else, I was burnt out. I am more mature now, have a family and a career, more capable than ever of processing new information, retaining facts and ideas, and more able to utilize the material learned within the real world and he was impressed. After much discussion and going through class schedules, it is finally written in stone, my classes.

Went back to the office, looked at the pricing for all the books and found it to be $333. Such a nice round number. I need to remind myself that the professors will only use 1/5th to 1/3rd of the whole book, and usually only one if s/he requires two or three.

Called the Financial Aid office, spoke with a person who finally had a clue. She told me that the financial aid staff will be running a new report to identify those students which have completed all their requirements either today or tomorrow. This will then generate the emails or postcards. I hope it is an email.
