An actual Metphistopheles Post!

Last seen here years ago, he rises from the ashes,.... no. Bad metaphor on this occasion.  But it took seeing live shots from Citi Field last night, and video of Shea from not quite 20 years before, to bring back some conceptual stuff here.

So this meme has been popping up on and off for a few months now:

When it came back around a few days ago, I finally realized how I related to it.

You see, there's another mysterious place like it which I know all too well. It has a fancier name, like "The Heights" or "The Hills." We call it "The Hunt," and for most of the past 20 years, the Buffalo Bills lived in there.

It was a seasonal place with an odd season, the middle weeks of December. By then, the good NFL teams had articulated themselves, the really shitty ones had fallen out of contention, but every Sunday, CBS and Fox would show the playoff brackets to date with a gaggle of posers still, mathematically, being "In The Hunt" for that elusive final wildcard or the One Sucky Division title. That graphic ALWAYS included a charging buffalo logo within it.

Never with them ever having any real chance of rising out of that pack with the tough roads ahead of them, which always seemed to involve a Christmas weekend trip to Fucksborough.

But still, a chance. And we played the ESPN playoff machine, assumed we'd win out and Denver and KC would tie in week 17 to let us sneak in.

And hey, it happened in 2017! Ending the 17-year playoff drought so we could just lose again!

It took all of those 17 preceding years and a couple after- with a new owner, GM and coach- to finally put in a process we could trust. Now at last, the Bills left The Hunt...and promptly sold their house there to the Mets:P

Five out with, now after last night's events, nineteen to play. Mostly against teams we're looking up at. Four more with the shitty team that can't consistently beat anybody BUT us. Three each against the one in our way to a wildcard and the one holding down the spot in The Heights we gave them back in August.

Hell, we couldn't hold a seven game lead with 17 to play in recent memory. So hope comes from our worst of memories.

Good thing ESPN doesn't have a playoff machine for MLB. Mets fan would be breaking it.
