What is a haibane's purpose? And what is the purpose behind the wings that seem so purposeless? One would be hard-pressed to come up with a fitting answer for this question.
It's not like the wings are vital for survival. It's not like they even function. They only rattle the spine of a person who wishes to deliver a killing blow in this manufactured paradise.
There is no death here, with or without wings. There is nothing to dread or look forward to. There is nothing to feel anymore.
