A generous orthodoxy?

For about 18 months now I have been puzzled by talk of the "emerging church". I discovered it through my Blogger profile, where I'd listed one of my interests as missiology, and clicked on it to see who else was interested in the topic (unfortunately that feature of Blogger no longer works, unlike LiveJournal). I found to my surprise that many people interested in missiology also listed "emerging church".

Last night I went to hear one of the reputed fundis of the emerging church movement: Notes from underground: Brian McLaren: a generous Orthodoxy. He had written a book called A generous orthodoxy, which I had been unable to find in our university library, or in any book shop, so i had to rely solely on what he said. And what he said sounded quite Orthodox to me, even illustrated by ikons.

This reinforced my impression, from trying to follow the "emerging conversation" over the last few months, that what many people seem to be looking for already exists in Orthodox Christianity. It makes me wonder why more are not finding it there.

Anyway, I think I may be able to follow the "emerging conversation" more easily in future.
