The year in review

Dec 31, 2014 18:06

I cannot believe we're farewelling another year. I feel like it's the night before going on holiday, when you're rushing through a billion things still to do.

1. What did you do in 2014 that you'd never done before?

What didn't I do? This was a year of trying new things, because life is too short to keep thinking someday maybe. Among the first times, I went to a grand slam, acted on stage, and plunged into writing a new genre.

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

Always mixed results. Always keep trying.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

Yes.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

No.

5. What countries did you visit?

None, just took two trips interstate.

6. What would you like to have in 2015 that you lacked in 2014?

Spending more time with friends.

7. What date from 2014 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

It's been a year of milestones, I can't select just one.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Revising and pitching the novel. An acceptance on the novella.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Not being better at tying up loose ends at work.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Yes, an operation that went well.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

My new phone and my new laptop.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

I'm not even up to the latest season, but the showrunners for The Legend of Korra.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

The federal government.

14. Where did most of your money go?

The mortgage.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Yuletide!

16. What song will always remind you of 2014?

Long Live by Taylor Swift.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

i. happier or sadder? Definitely happier.
ii. thinner or fatter? Probably about the same.
iii. richer or poorer? Richer in some ways, poorer in others.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Writing.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Internet.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?

With family.

21. What was your favorite TV program?

I've fallen behind quite terribly on my viewing. But I finally watched the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special, and it rekindled my love of the show.

22. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

No, but for the politicians I hated, that hate has probably intensified?

23. What was the best book you read?

Death of a Pirate King by Josh Lanyon.

24. What was your greatest musical discovery?

That Queen was touring Australia for the first time in 30 years. And that Adam Lambert does a great job of what really is an impossible job.

25. What did you want and get?

To be free of my old job.

26. What was your favorite film of this year?

Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Because it launched me into the fandom.

27. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

Cake with family. Older but wiser.

28. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Finishing more stories than I did.

29. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2014?

Wear it or get rid of it.

30. What kept you sane?

As always, friends and family.

31. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

I guess I looked at a lot of Sebastian Stan gifsets on Tumblr? I'M SORRY.

32. What political issue stirred you the most?

The treatment of refugees. The reality of climate change.

33. Who did you miss?

My old workmates.

34. Who was the best new person you met?

See answer 3.

35. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2014:

The grass may always be greener on the other side of the fence, but it's worth the journey to find out.

36. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:

Long live all the mountains we moved
I had the time of my life fighting dragons with you

Happy New Year. See you in 2015! (I can't believe we've arrived at the year of Third Impact.)
