My weekend was spent at
Animania. Full report later. In other news:
* It's probably just as well that
Good Food Month comes around just once a year. During September, I went to four of the Sugar Hit dessert nights, sampling delights such as peach creme brulee, hazelnut praline slice, sour cream ice cream, and way, way too many others.
* Watched The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Entertaining enough, but not what I'd call a must see movie. I wouldn't have enjoyed it nearly as much as I did if it hadn't been for Mina Harker and Dorian Gray, who both rocked. And when they were in the same scene together - woo, the sparkage! *This* is how a good het ship should be written - two cool characters dripping with chemistry. Mina/Dorian all the way!
* Went to
Necronomicon last Saturday. It's the only RPG con I make sure to attend every year. This time, because they cancelled some of the games, I only ended up playing one - but it was a big one. 'The Waning of the Crescent' was a double session freeform set in the warring Moorish city states of southern Spain during the reconquista. Its sister freeform, 'The Crossroads of Toledo', was set in the Christian kingdoms of the north at the same time. I chose this game because it covered the events that The Lions of Al-Rassan, my favourite Guy Gavriel Kay book, was based on. My character didn't have terribly much to do for most of it, since the factions which were supposed to be rivals became allies early on. Still, we reversed the course of history and took all of Spain, which was pretty cool.
* Caught the train up to Newcastle last Sunday for the
National Young Writers' Festival. Most of my time was spent at the zine fair, where I met up with
pirochan,
leenabeans,
evilhayama,
monkeydan, and Chewie. Wandered around, bought some zines, checked out a panel on self-publishing. I like the atmosphere of things like this - so much energy and passion and individualism. It really encourages you to get out there and do stuff yourself...
