Character History:
Tifa grew up in the town of Nibelheim, a close-knit community with a calm, inviting atmosphere, and was raised by both parents. She was a very popular girl, easily making friends with all of the other children in town...except one: Cloud Strife. Quiet and aloof, Cloud was often ostracized by his peers, and Tifa’s friends all looked down on him. Despite this, she admired him from afar, an admiration that was mutual.
Tifa's almost charmed existence came to and end when her mother passed away of illness, a personal loss that struck Tifa deeply down to the core of her being. In an effort to cope, Tifa turned to a local myth to comfort her: according to the folklore of Nibelheim, when a person dies, his or her spirit passes through the mountains on the way to the afterlife.nDesperate to see her mother again, Tifa resolved to make the dangerous ascent up Mount Nibel, in hopes that she could catch the spirit of her dearly departed before it was too late.
Though loyal, her friends didn't want to partake of her reckless quest, though they were unable to talk her out of it either. Only Cloud dared to follow her, though only from a distance. In the end her quest led to a terrible fall for both she and Cloud, leading to superficial injuries for Cloud but a trauma induced coma for Tifa. The entire accident was blamed on Cloud, though Tifa scarcely knew he had been following her at the time. The fall left Tifa with a large, jagged scar on her upper back, between her shoulder blades.
Despite the injuries, Tifa used the accident to become better acquainted with Cloud, eventually becoming close friends. Her admiration blossomed into adoration for his bravery and determination, and eventually into love...though she wouldn't admit it. When Cloud decided to leave Nibelheim to enlist in the illustrious SOLDIER ranks, he invited her to the well of the town to say his farewells. There they made a fateful promise: if Tifa was ever in trouble, Cloud, her “hero”, would come to save her.
Cloud's departure was extremely difficult for Tifa, and she missed him more and more as the days passed. She always thought of him, and searched constantly for news regarding his newfound fame. When SOLDIER came to Nibelheim to help curb the monster population, Tifa was sure that she’d see him there; she waited for him at the town gate, but he was nowhere to be found. After the job was done, the Shinra troops thought it prudent to investigate the Mako Reactor in Mount Nibel. Tifa was selected to guide Sephiroth, Zack, and their MP subordinate to the reactor. She and the masked MP waited outside as the two SOLDIERs entered the building.
Deep in the Mako Reactor of Mount Nibel, Sephiroth and Zack uncovered evidence of Hojo’s bizarre experiments. Deeply disturbed by what he had seen, the eccentric Sephiroth vanished deep into Shinra Mansion. When at last Sephiroth discovered the real meaning of Hojo’s research, he went completely insane. Driven to madness by the terrible truth of his existence, Sephiroth emerged from the mansion and killed everyone in his path, slaughtering the citizens of Nibelheim and setting it aflame in a blind rage. Everything that Tifa had known and loved perished in the fires.
Searching for her father amidst the flames, Tifa followed Sephiroth's path into the mountains, where she found the body of her father beside Sephiroth's sword. With his dying breath he encouraged her to run, to flee from Sephiroth, but she would have none of it. With everything taken from her, Tifa mounted the steps to the reactor and charged Sephiroth with his own blade...only to be contemptuously cast aside by the much stronger SOLDIER. The blow nearly killed her, and as she tumbled down the stairs, covered in blood, she began to lose consciousness. Her final memory was that of Cloud - who had been the masked MP all along - coming to move her out of harm’s way.
In the bleak aftermath, Tifa’s fallen body was found by Zangan, her old martial arts instructor. The two of them were the only survivors. Applying what curative magic he could Zangan shouldered his wounded student and began the long, difficult journey to the city of Midgar. When they arrived he began the long and difficult process of restoring Tifa to health, building back up her shattered body with curative magicks, further martial arts training and time away from her ruined home.
As soon as Tifa regained her strength, Zangan disappeared - and she was alone again. Faced with a new life in the harsh slums of Midgar, Tifa fought to find a way to make a living. Eventually she managed to open up the 7th Heaven, a bar for the downtrodden people of Midgar. The bars atmoshpere and location eventually drew in members of AVALANCHE, the "terrorist" group fighting against Shinra in Midgar. After meeting with the fiery Barret, Tifa was persueded by his passionate appeal and turned the bar into an impromptu headquarters for the rag-tag band of rebels.
Tifa discovered an incoherant Cloud at a train station in Midgar and convinced him to work for Barret as a mercenary, to keep him close once again. They work together against Shinra in Midgar, sabotaging a Mako reactor. However Shinra discovers the 7th Heaven and it's connection to AVALANCHE and demolishes all of Sector 7, killing everyone there. Tifa and Cloud are seperated, eventually re-united to rescue Aeris from Shinra. During the rescue they discover that Sephiroth is still alive and determined to "wound" the planet to join with it's energy and become like a god. AVALANCHE pursues Sephiroth all over the planet, often finding themselves one step behind.
Cloud and Aeris develop a close relationship and Tifa quitely hangs back, not wanting to cause problems in a "love triangle" with them. She's among the most upset of her team, however, when Aeris seperates from the group and is murdered by Sephiroth before she can be saved. During this time Cloud begins to fall apart mentally, unsure of what he can believe and who he can trust. Tifa took over the team and kept them together during this time, eventually helping Cloud save himself. She was instrumental in the final assault against Sephiroth at the Northern Crater, stopping the madman, but not before he severey damages Midgar with a powerful Meteor spell.
Sephiroth's defeat leads to a time of rebuilding and adaptation for Tifa and her friends. Many go their seperate ways, but Tifa agrees to take care of Barret's adopted daughter Marlene, eventually adopting a boy named Denzel. She opens a new 7th Heaven and settles down with Cloud to try and have a "real" life and a "real" family. Cloud is haunted by his failure to save Aeris, leading to tension and strife in his relationship with Tifa and eventually with the children.
During one of his many absences, Tifa and Marlene go to the church where he met Aeris and discover he's been living there. They wait for him but encounter Loz instead, one of three brothers trying to revive Sepiroth. Tifa battles him, but is unable to overcome his strength and is incapacitated and Marlene kidnapped. Cloud arrives to discover Tifa unconcious, waking her brieft before passing out himself from his Geostigma. The two are retrieved by Reno and Rude and brought back to the 7th Heaven whereTifa confronts Cloud about putting the memory of Aeris before his new family, even being unable to chase Marlene and Denzel to the ruins where Aeris died, convincing him to chase after the children.
She rallies old friends from AVALANCHE and helps Cloud to defeat Bahamut before it destroys Midgar, and convinces the others to let Cloud defeat the reborn Sephiroth on his own and regain his sense of purpose. She watches over with a smile as he cures the children of the geostigma.
Point in Canon: Just after the end of Advent Children (above). While the children are being bathed in the cleansing pool to cure them of their Geostigma, Tifa goes to fetch fresh clothes and towels for Cloud and the Children, before finding herself suddenly in another place...
Character Personality: Tifa is kind, cheerful and optimistic. Even when things are at their worst she refuses to give up, pushing ahead with determination. She's quick to forgive, happy to give all but the worst offenders second chances to earn her friendship. Tifa is also warm and caring, almost to a fault, willing to put the wellbeing and happiness of others ahead of her own. She's an easy fit to become the "heart" of whatever group she's working with, brightening her friends spirits and caring for their needs. She can also be called nurturing or motherly, having adopted Barret's adopted daughter when he needed to tend to the issues of his past, even going so far as to adopt another child into her "family" with Cloud.
Tifa hates to be alone however, having lost everyone she ever cared for at a very young age. Although she's since built herself back up (with the help of her mentor) she clings to the friends and family she does have, preferring not to be seperated from them at all, especially for any real length of time. The fear of being alone combined with a tendancy to ignore her own feelings can lead her to being melancholy, though she tries her best to hide it from her friends and loved ones. It can take days or longer for her to speak openly about something that's bothering her, especially when it comes to romance or relationships.
Her good-natured determination can lead to stubborness, particularly in the defense of those she loves. On at least two occasions she's engaged a vastly superior foe with little thought to her own safety, seeking vengeance for slain loved ones or to protect them. Though not fragile, this disregard for her own health can, and has, lead to serious injury.
Character Plans: I hope to get Tifa involved in a lot of the character and NPC-driven plots around sirenspull. When it comes to "doing what's right" I think she'd be a great character for jumping in with both feet. Ultimately she might try to set up some kind of organization for newcomers, maybe becoming like a den-mother. I'd also like for her to re-open the Seventh Heaven in Sirenspull, since it's a pretty constant part of her lore.
