snl shorts

I am in that "so tired your brain doesn't realize it needs to go to sleep" state. So I ended up watching shorts from Saturday Night Live on Hulu, of course. I have to admit, somewhat guiltily, that I was kind of amused and kind of skeptical / sketched out by Samberg's early efforts for SNL, the semi-famous "Lazy Sunday" and Natalie Portman's filthy ( Read more... )

my favorite is still "ras trent", because it works on so many levels; it slyly references a lot of old-school roots and furthermore really calls out the stereotype of the white college kid who thinks he's a Rastafarian. i laugh my ass off at that still; i feel like there is some definite breaking of the fourth wall, but at the same time i know that half the people watching probably didn't get what the "murder she wrote" reference was actually to.

i found Natalie rapping to be pretty entertaining, too, but that was mostly eazy-e references and one choice line lifted from my fair city's most famous rapper. not the same kind of incisive social commentary.

sloths and like a boss, alas, are both genius, too.

the sloth thing looks like a ripoff of the rathergood dudes.

i think they are desperately trying to recreate the success of "dick in a box" on their other musical skits though.

on another note, i saw this and thought of you oddly enough:

I liked the Natalie Portman rap and "Dick in a Box" (mainly as a brilliant send-up of Color Me Badd). "Like a Boss" was decent, but most of Samberg's stuff is awful and unfunny. And then there were the couple of "The Out-of-Breath Jogger from " bits he did early on in his time on SNL that were horrible. The one from 1982 was especially bad because it was making references to things that did not happen until after 1982, but he'd apparently been told about these things from the "early 80s" and decided that they'd make great references in this really weak idea for a sketch.
