Incantations I So Hope You've Heard

It's Halloween - time to reheat some pasta. I bought some candy the other day just in case Trick or Treaters show up. It's my first Halloween in this house and I don't know what to expect. It was a small smattering of kids in Iowa, but enough to have some candy on hand. I am so glad I left the Halloween themed candy bowl on the curb in Iowa. Or did I chuck it? Maybe I chucked it.

Cliff is pacing the street outside my house. Kids indeed have something to be afraid of this Halloween.

I have two porches, one on the right and one on the left. The house is on a hill, and the driveway is right in front of the house, so it is not entirely obvious where to enter. Both entrances are kind of around a bend without any light to guide the way. Kind of creepy. If I didn't know the house I'd be creeped out. I left the left side porch's light on.

Dishes washer is running, washing machine is running, my pasta is forty five seconds into being reheated. All is good on Halloween; and the door bell rings.

I grab the candy bag with the fun sized M&M's (peanuts - if I were a kid on Halloween this is what I would want) unlock the left porch door and see three adorable little kids who answer with a very timid "Trick or Treat". The only boy in the group actually lets his "Trick or Treat" get more timid as he takes a good look at me when the door opens. The boy is a green dinosaur, the middle girl is a princess, and the girl on the left is some kind of rogue dancer / pirate - I can't tell. The boy has a plastic pumpkin stuffed with candy. The princess has a blue bag full on candy. The dancer pirate is holding out her pink painted fingers for the goods she knows are coming. I don't see her holding any bag. Maybe she is eating as she is going.

I doll out the candy as the kids expect, and they are all keenly watching my hand - probably entranced by the fact that, yes, they are going to actually get free candy. Then I lose their focus in such a way that even the free fun sized M&M's can't hold their attention - they notice Lola creeping towards the door. I forget she likes to make a break for it whenever she can. At the sight of Lola all three kids look through me, as if I had suddenly turned into some kind of ghost, and point at Lola exclaiming: "Kitty! Kitty! Kitty!" They were still uttering the word "kitty" as I wished them a happy Halloween and closed the door.

I pick up Lola and head back into the kitchen, where Isobel is licking at the alfredo sauce that still in its tupperware container. All in all I'd say it has been a pretty good Halloween. Happy Halloween.
