I think the closest to egregiousness re: 'classic rock' stations was hearing Losing My Religion on a classic rock station a few years ago. This is the sort of station whose musical choices get to early-mid-eighties at latest. Losing My Religion is from 1991.

They also didn't play any other R.E.M. and nothing else from that period.

A friend and I were talking the other day and some song from 1990 (or thereabouts) came on. My friend says, "You know, this is classic rock." I was like WHUT NO. And she said yes, think about it... this came out 20 years ago.
