A new take on Holy wars...

One time I sent some [Jehova's Witnesses] to the apartment of Mormon missionaries. It was all I could do not to pull out popcorn and a folding chair to watch the show.

Context knows how to deal with religious solicitors.

I'm studying to be a pastor, mainline Protestant. Which means I'm learning Greek and Hebrew and all kinds of theology.

Is it bad that I'm really looking forward to when these folks show up at my door, so I can sit them down in my library for a couple hours?

My dad invited Mormons in when he was a young theology student, and took notes while they talked. Learning from him, I did the same thing about six years ago, and it was kind of fun - they talked about their thing, I showed them my breviary, and so on. Never did get around to reading the book of Mormon, though, it was PAINFULLY boring.

(Am a lapsed high-church Lutheran. Dad's a retired professor in studies of Islam and also a Lutheran minister. So I'm used to seeing religions as Interesting Things.)

I do find it occasionally interesting to see exactly how many parallels I can draw between two seemingly different religions.

I'm of the personal opinion that all of the largest ones came from a single root source, but that's just me. =p

Bad? Are you kidding? I second the webcam request when it happens! 8-)

Back in college, a JW went to the home of an older gentleman I know and said that she knew Greek. Said gentleman was actually a Greek scholar and theology professor, so he pulled out his Greek text and asked her to read. Busted!

Honestly, that's really cool :) I was raised Methodist, which is about as happy-huggy-cuddly as Christianity can get. That being the case, we got quite the wide variety of pastors coming through. My favorite pastor, by far, was the one who had made a detailed study of Hebrew and etymology, and worked original meanings into his sermons. He never pushed it, but it was really neat to learn how passages had changed over time, and what they meant originally vs. what they mean now.

I'm such a geek...

I would've loved having that pastor.

Heck, I'd love having that pastor right now! :D
