an early birthday wish

I THINK IT'S TOMORROW BUT I MAY NOT BE AROUND AND WANTED TO POST THIS TO BE SURE SHE GETS IT

The date has been missing from my birthday reminder list but I have it checked on my calender, so I hope I am correct. I once made a mistake on another friend's (Eileen) birthday so forgive me if I'm a little off. Anyway, I think tomorrow is my dear friend Christine's (Xinexine72) birthday and I'm sure her day will be a full and fun one. It's probably just as well I put this up today. I thought I might celebrate it by recalling how we met. Here it is:

I first met Christine while working at a grocery store. She’d come in with her mom, kind of clinging and looking rather shy, but always with a ready smile if you said or did something funny. I used to pretend to stub my toe on the wheels of the shopping carts when putting them away, and she always thought that was pretty funny. She liked the fun stickers I put on her nose too, but that’s another story. I even "babysat" her a couple of times. We had a great time watching I Love Lucy re-runs, reading Alice Through the Looking Glass, and listening to Sergeant Pepper on an old cassette player I had. I still have a scratchy tape of her telling a joke about “shopping time”.

I saw her many years later on a bus heading home after working out, engrossed in whatever she was listening to on her earphones, and making a point of ignoring me, but I got her attention by stubbing my toe getting into my seat. Kind of. She actually just rolled her eyes and then turned her head slightly and looked out the window. I think she peeked at my reflection a time or two though.

I met her again after all those years, not too long ago, around February actually, and she still didn’t remember me. I was eating a hot dog on a bench overlooking the lake, and she stubbed her toe on a crack in the sidewalk just in front of me. I offered her a kind word and she must have been so happy I didn’t make fun of her she struck up a conversation, although she still refused my offer to buy her a hot dog. She just took a bite of mine.

She’s pretty funny and has very healthy blood, or so it appears, although I don’t think she has the best eating habits. I know she likes making fun of people and things because we sat there and made fun of everything from Olympic medals and geriatric groupies to fried brains and the peculiar habits of nuns. I asked her if she wanted to have some pie and coffee, but she said she was exhausted and took a rain check. I think she was just being nice, because we never did have coffee and I'm still waiting to send her those pies.

I could go on but she’d only get flustered and maybe a little annoyed that I’d let all this out into the public, but I don’t know if I’ll have the chance to tell it later, and what can she do to me in retaliation anyway? Yipe! I just thought of a few hundred things. I’d better cut this off now and so I’ll just say Happy Birthday Kid!

Okay, now, say Goodnight Christine!
