Temperance Brennan was constantly puzzled by Angela. She'd come back from Europe to find the woman in tears on her sofa, begging for a rational explanation to her failed relationship with Hodgins. They talked for all of ten minutes, sat for five minutes in silence, and then Angela stood up and rummaged through CDs. There was grumbling and exasperated sighs before she apparently found what she was looking for and put it into the stereo.
Soft and slow music, quite unlike what Brennan had always thought Angela's tastes were like, flooded the room. She watched carefully as the artist approached the couch again and extended her hand. "Dance with me?"
She had a small smile but sad eyes, and when Temperance took her hand she pulled her up and immediately pressed herself close. All that she could do in response was wrap her arms around Angela's shoulders and sway along with her to the music as she clung to her silently, cheek against her shoulder, nose and mouth pressed into her neck.
It must have been halfway through the song when Brennan finally had to ask. "If this is helping you, that's great, but... Ange, what are we doing?"
Her response was a grumble, and warm breath against her skin. "Shh. Let it finish."
Brennan sighed and complied. They stood pressed together in the middle of her living room for another minute before the song ended and Angela extracted herself. She smiled, smoothing Brennan's shirt again.
"That was our song. I was making a new association."
