Title: Apologies
Prompt: #154 - Nostalgia (for
femslash100)
Fandom: Avatar: the Last Airbender
Pairing: Azula/Ty Lee
Rating: PG
Notes: Well, this is significantly longer than 250 words. I'm putting up a shortened version at
femslash100, but this was a challenge in which I couldn't actually do what I wanted to in that space. Contains non-con kissing between 11-year-olds, if that will bother you.
Word Count: 873
The incident at Chan and Ruon-Jian's party was the second time in Ty Lee's life that she could remember Azula feeling actively bad about something. Once the princess had left to find her brother, Ty Lee excused herself from the party and made her way down to the beach. The night air was cold and the moon reflected off the sea, the lapping of the waves drowning out any noises from the party. The acrobat sat down in the sand, leaning against a rock, to think.
It had been Azula's 11th birthday, and the festivities were held in the royal courtyard. Ty Lee hadn't actually seen much of her friend yet, and was sitting near the pond with Mai.
"She'll come see us soon," the older girl said, idly throwing pebbles into the pond. "She has to see everyone else first."
She knew this was true, but was having a hard time keeping herself still. Sighing, she began to do somersaults along the ground.
"Ty Lee!" a stern voice said, and the girl was stopped by a small foot. "You're going to get your clothes all dirty and I won't want to touch you."
"AZULA!" she cried, jumping up and flinging her arms around the princess. "Happy birthday!"
The birthday girl just gave an unsettling grin and forced Ty Lee away, keeping a hold on her shoulders. "Come here. It's my birthday, so you have to do whatever I tell you to." Her nails dug into the other girl's skin, who gave a sheepish smile.
Taking her by the wrist, Azula pulled Ty Lee behind a nearby tree. Mai followed them, concerned about what she was going to do. The princess had pinned the brown-haired girl against the trunk. "I want to try something with you, so hold still." Mai inhaled deeply, and forced a calm face. "Azula, don't hurt her," she said, trying to keep her fists from clenching at her side.
The pair both looked towards her, and Ty Lee just gave a reassuring smile. "She would never hurt me, Mai. She's my friend." The offender said nothing, only gave Mai a silencing glare before turning back to her prey.
It seemed to happen so fast that Azula's friends weren't entirely sure what was happening. One minute she was a good foot away from the deft young girl, pinning her with arms out. Then suddenly their faces were together, the firebender's lips pressing hard against a started Ty Lee's.
When she finally pulled away, Ty Lee yelped and pulled herself to the ground, breaking free of Azula's grip. It certainly wasn't the first time her friend had ever hurt her, but this felt different.
Azula watched curiously as Mai ran over to help Ty Lee up, glaring. She seemed to know better than to actually say anything. But this was the first time Ty Lee was ever so upset about something she'd done, and the first time Mai had acted after the fact.
"Well, I have other people to see. If you see Zuko, tell him he still has to wish me a happy birthday." With that she turned and left, ignoring the odd feeling in her stomach.
When the feeling hadn't gone away even after three days, Azula started to get a little freaked out. What was wrong with her? Why couldn't she stop thinking about what she'd done to Ty Lee? She hadn't seen her friend since the party, either. So she decided that this was obviously something she had to deal with, and invited her over.
Ty Lee knew something was up when Azula asked her to meet her in her chambers. She was barely ever allowed in Azula's personal space, and the fact that the princess wanted to meet her there alone frightened her a little. She was still a little nervous about a repeat of their last meeting's incident, but was more nervous about what would happen if she didn't go.
When she arrived her friend was sitting on her bed, and watched as she came in with an inscrutable gaze.
"Close the door, would you?"
Ty Lee complied, wincing a bit as she heard the click. There was no turning back now. She stood nervously with her back to the door, waiting.
"Come sit by me," Azula said, nicely enough, but clear that it was an order. So she slowly made her way over to the bed, sitting carefully as far away as she could without seeming odd.
Adrenaline shot into her veins as she felt the other girl's hand on hers, a look of panic on her face. She squeezed, firmly but gently, and suddenly Ty Lee had no idea what was going on anymore.
"Look. I guess I'm... I guess I'm kind of sorry. For what I did on my birthday." She sighed, looking away from her friend, not believing she was actually apologizing.
Panic turned into confusion, because Ty Lee couldn't believe she was actually apologizing either. "It's okay," she said, giving Azula an awkward smile as the princess turned back around.
"Good! Now let's go find Zuko."
Ty Lee had never expected to get remorse out of her friend ever again. It was a nice feeling, especially since she'd never witnessed Azula apologizing to anyone else. Maybe now that they were older, she'd show her what kissing was supposed to be like.
