I'd like to take a quick poll.

How many of you thought, like I did, that when you first read that horrible, awful little sentence, that Remus and Tonks were actually only sleeping? I don't know what stopped me and prompted me to go back, but I did, and after re-reading it about 3 times and it SLOWLY starting to sink in, the waterworks began.

To me, it was just adding insult to injury. Not only were the deaths of my two favourite characters revealed in such a seemingly-offhand way, but misunderstanding the sentence on top of all that... Cruel.

Me, me, me! I actually put my hand over my pounding heart and gave a sigh of relief and said, "Thank God!" Then my heart plummeted.

And me. It took three re-reads of the sentance before it really dawned and that was the cruellest thing of all...:(

I thought we (and Harry) were supposed to think they were dead, but until Remus showed up for the Resurrection Stone, I was still desperately hoping for a plot twist, for Harry to find out later that they'd only been Stunned.

I sort of glanced over it, and then re-read. I think I was in denial until it said it again though - I didn't want it to be true, and I really hoped that they were just sleeping, even though obviously that made no sense.

Of course, I'd also had a feeling they would die. I don't know why, but I did. So I guess I was expecting it, in a really morbid way.

Still so devastating...

I admit I did have to read it twice before it sank in that they were actually dead (still can't quite believe I'm saying that!)

No, I knew they were dead - as soon as I read that someone else was fighting Dolohov, there was a cold stone in my heart, and I was dreading it.

No, I figured they were dead. But I was so tired when I was reading that part that the info didn't process and when someone referred to their deaths I was like "When did that happen?" and had to go back and re-read the chapter.

I don't think it was an insult, though. I mean, yeah, they were a lot of people's favorite characters but I don't think JKR meant for it to be that offhand. You have to remember that it's Harry PoV and he really was just running past to go do something else. He didn't mean to ignore their deaths, as proved later - he mentions it again (or else I wouldn't have known they had died, lol!)

I didn't get the feeling they were just sleeping, but rather that perhaps their way of death was not Avada Kedavra. But maybe it's the writer in me...

Oh, I totally agree that it doesn't sound like they were Avada Kedavra-ed - which leads me to wonder how they did die, which, alas is something I suspect we'll never know.

Or were they really just sleeping and Harry got confused? Remember that scene in Firefly where Simon and River 'die' and then Mal (or was it Jayne?) brings them back to life? Because you know, Dumbledore is the kind of bastard that would want to fake Harry out so he'd perform better.

But yeah. I kinda want to run with that. Then they go into hiding in Muggle Australia and Teddy never went to Hogwarts and runs in Victoire at a Wicked Sister concert and visits his godparents regularly by portkey because he's that sort of pimp.

I believe molly_coddles is working on a theory where they've actually faked their own deaths using a time-turner... and they don't look happy and peaceful so much as smug that they've pulled it off.

I'm all for plausible denial....

a_t_rain is arguing the Draught of Living Death, and I can totally see that.

Me? Other than Australia, I'm just hoping for zombies.

I do seem to remember everyone thinking the Draught of Living Death would be important - so I'm totally on board that they're faking.

And where were the zombies?! When they couldn't find Moody's body I thought 'oh, he'll be back as Inferi (an inferus?), then' - but... nothing.

I KNOW! What's with JKR always letting us down? Seriously.
