Your delicate use of concrete physical details is just beautiful -- how they are lying, how they touch. It makes the scene vividly real and even more emotionally satisfying.
I especially liked this line: He is torn; torn between prolonging the light-hearted moment and not trivialising what that moment had meant to him -- to them, and the root cause of the change in her. Somehow this really sums up for me all the complicated emotions Remus is feeling here, from relief to guilt to joy.
And this one is heartbreaking: He can't bear it, actually, to know that she's longed for him as much as he has for her. He understands that hurt and pain and hadn't expected the same from her. It drives home the fact that Remus has trouble believing he can be important to people too.
