Lost in Translation
‘What are you thinking about?’
It’s the question she longs to ask, but never does, aware of how firmly it would put her in the category of ‘needy, clingy girlfriend’.
She’s desperate to know though. His silences ought to speak volumes, but she still can’t quite decipher their language, unfamiliar as yet with the particular dialect of his expressions and manners. That small bite of his lip - is it the word for worry or for concentration? And that particular gaze into the distance - does it tell of intellectual acrobatics or is it the phrase for self-doubt?
It makes her anxious, this inability to interpret the signs. Paralysed by her lack of fluency, she’s lost; terrified that in her ignorance she’ll make a wrong turn that will lead them to a precipice. So she lapses into her own silence, conscious that asking for a crib sheet is the fastest and surest route to a dead end, and prays her quietness shouts ‘I love you’ loud enough and clear enough that he will be able to comprehend her.
