My road bike had major issues with the brakes, and after spending all of Saturday putting away the pile (at LEAST 4' high) of paper the movers used, plus breaking down the boxes and getting everything nicely stored in the garage, I decided I didn't want to spend all of Sunday running back and forth to the bike shop to get things I needed to redo them. So, I took the bike to the shop and told them to deal with it.

I tried taking the mountain bike to work on Tuesday. The trip there went fine. From home to the train station is a big downhill, so that was extremely easy. Riding on the train is mostly a piece of cake, although I need to get some sort of tag to say how far I'm going so my bike doesn't get stacked in by other people. The trip from the train station into work is doable, and I get plenty of exercise dealing with the two hills over roads/train tracks/freeways between the train station and work. It's a lot faster than waiting for the shuttle, though. Even if the shuttle is waiting at the train station, someone on a bike can beat the shuttle to work. Maybe not with enough time left over to take a shower, but most of the time the shuttle isn't that prompt.

The trip home was bad. The seat on the mountain bike has this problem where it can pivot back and forth, plus I hadn't raised it high enough. This wasn't a problem on the way to work, but it was a major problem on the way back. It took a lot of strength and exertion to keep myself in a semi-tolerable position on the bike when the road was level, and was extremely painful going back up over the hills. Really did a number on my upper inner thighs. I was thinking of having Shannon come and get me at the train station in Redwood City, but decided it wasn't all that far to get home from there. The final trip home wasn't quite as painful as the earlier part had been, but because half of the trip was uphill (and got steeper as it went along), I was exhausted when I finally got home.

I suppose I could try raising the seat, and tightening up the single bolt that is supposed to keep the seat from pivoting, but since my thighs are still in some pain from that trip, five days ago, I think I'll wait and see how the trip home from the bike shop with my road bike is tomorrow.
