So yesterday my sister calls me all excited about this Athena figurine she bought for me. And she's all "I THINK IT WOULD MAKE A GREAT 30 IN 30 POST!" And last night when I instead posted about Sonali, she was all "WHAT ABOUT MY ATHENA FIGURINE!" So, this is for my sister.
She picked Athena because that's my favorite goddess. Well, one of them. She's tied with Artemis. My computer is named Athena :) *dork* The figurine is pretty cool. Except she has blond hair, what?
Anyway, she's standing on top of a stack of some of my Classics-related books. I forgot/misplaced the others. Oh well. I have two versions of Plato's Republic and the 4 plays related to Socrates' trials because the second class I took made me get very specific editions. Boo. Then there's a book with some excerpts from Thucydides. Herodotus' Histories are much better, but that book is one of the misplaced ones. Also, I have Goddesses in Every Woman that I have never read. Someone from my Greek class gave it to me when she found out I was a Classics major. I should get around to reading it someday, but it just sounds so... yeah. I'm sure it's very interesting.
But my absolute favorites are the book set of Greek playwrights. Aeschylus is the one who made me decide to be a Classics major. I love Greek plays. They're such a perfect mixture of entertainment and commentary. Most of the great playwrights would rework the myths and legends of their society, looking at them from alternate views in order to show a modern meaning behind it. For instance, Euripides writes a series of plays about mythical women, and shows the myth through their eyes. He attempted to show Medea's side to killing her children after Jason betrayed her when history had painted her a crazy inexcusable murderer. Anyway. I like Classics. The end.
