Persepolis (2007; 96 min.; PG-13) is a French animated movie based upon Marjane Satrapi's autobiographical graphic novel of the same name. This was an Oscar nominee for Best Animated Feature. I watched the movie dubbed in English.
Marjane just wants to be an ordinary kid, but that isn't easy in 1978 Iran. The animated film follows Marjane's childhood in Iran during the end of the Shah's reign, the religious revolution and the war with Iraq, her adolescence in Austria and return to Tehran as an adult.
The animation was very minimalist - just enough to support the dialog. I enjoyed the first part of the movie that dealt with early childhood in Iran during the end of the Shah's reign and the Islamic Revolution. I thought the movie slowed when she went to Austria and then returned to Iran.
I liked the movie but I am not going to recommend it unless you are very curious about a slice of life animated movie that gives you some idea of life abroad for an Iranian and life in Iran.
