Well at least in the center and the south of México on November 1st. and 2nd. the day of the dead is celebrated.
On November first we celebrate the kids and on the 2nd. we celebrate the adults.
It´s believed that the spirit of the dead comes to earth on those days... we have to guide the souls of our dead relatives to our home, so we put a path of Zepasuchil flower (Marigold) and candles from the grave to our homes (that is on small villages on cities it´s just from the front door of our house).
The path ends in an altar where we put pictures of our departed relatives, their favorite food, drink, games and some stuff they used to own in life.
The soul comes and accepts the offering and then you can eat the food.
We have some skulls made of sugar with the our names written on the forehead, tamales, chocolate, atole and "dead bread" (its a bread with a sugar coating... it has on top some figures that seem bones).
The Day of the dead is a huge celebration specially in Michoacán.
This day was celebrated by the Aztecs and the Maya, but after Spanish invasion and conquest it was mixed with Catholic beliefs.
In the north part of Mexico Halloween is more commonly celebrated.
I like Halloween, though I stand with the celebration of my native mexican culture.
The bad thing of Halloween is that, in a way, it foments consumism and the true meaning of the feast is lost.
I have fun on Halloween, but I don´t forget the celebration of the 2 next days.
