I haven't done one of these in a long time. I've read a lot of good fics lately, but in order for me to rec it, it has to have that "something" different, that "something" special. I read another fic a couple weeks ago that had that "something special" and I will eventually rec it. I want to rec that with a Hijinks posting, so maybe next week.
As for this Fic Rec, it is entitled Trial By Fire by Morgan. You can find it
here.
Here is the author's summary of the fic: Character study of John Winchester. "John loves his boys. But Mary was his hope. What got taken from him that night was more than just his wife, the mother of his children."
This was a very interesting study into the mind of John. As you all should know by now, I love John. He was a flawed man, but he was a good father that did his best for his boys. And this fic really delves into John and his thinking and why he did what he did. The struggles he faced with raising two boys after the death of Mary.
It was never really spelled out in canon except for a small tidbit of conversation between John and Azazel about John knowing about Sammy. We don't know how long John knew about this, but given as to the way Mary died and where she died, he had to have had some gut instinct that there were big targets on Dean and Sam's backs and he had to do what was needed to make sure his boys were prepared for what was to come.
Being a soldier in Vietnam, John had the experience and knew what it would take to make his boys ready, and he did exactly that. This fic explores the struggle he felt having to do that. It also explores his observations about the close relationship of Dean and Sam and how he is a little jealous of their intimacy, but yet, acknowledges that in order for them to survive they will need that shared closeness. This fic also looks at John's observations about the character of Dean and Sam, individually and together. It also shares with us how John knew and felt, that eventually to keep them safe, he will have to make a big sacrifice. As hard as that will be when the day comes, John will be willing to pay it, no matter what. Because they are his boys, they are Mary's boys, and he loves them, more than himself, because he is their father.
I really enjoyed this fic and if you want to read a good study into the mind of John Winchester this is definitely a must-read.
