Fic Recommendation
I read a gaggle of one-shot fics over a month ago and amongst them there were many that were very excellent and worth a mention to all you FanFic lovers. I finally just finished writing my comments to the authors and now I want to tell you all about these wonderful fics that I recently read. So here goes in Alphabetical order.
A Quiet Place to Rest by carryokee. This fic is set Post-Series. The author's summary reads: The Winchesters may be retired, but they're still in the fight. I really loved this fic. Dean is now in his 40s and he and Sam have retired and are settled in a cabin deep in the woods. They have settled in to a comfortable existence as retired hunters, but they are really not completely out of the game. Dean is troubled with physical limitations, but Sam still has a grand library and continues his research. One night a young hunter comes upon them for food and assistance and brings us several fun surprises.
Animal Crackers by trocket. A very, very cute Wee!Chester fic. The author summary of the story reads: Sammy wants to go to the zoo, Dean improvises. And indeed Dean does, in a very cute and adorkable way. Just the kind of fic to give you that awwww factor.
At the End by rainylemons. Author summary of the story is: A dormant plague Pestilence left behind wipes out most of mankind. Dean and Sam take refuge in an abandoned house when Dean gets pneumonia and is forced to stop drinking. There is a lot of hurt!Dean in this story and he gets his comfort, nice comfort in the end. The circumstances are bleak in this story, Dean and Sam are among some of the last few survivors and Dean is close to death's door. They have a couple of puppies that help keep the mood light and Lisa and Ben make an appearance later in the story, which being a fan of Lisa, I absolutely loved. Great story!
August Sky by hey_dr_yang. Author summary: Nearly four months after Dean showed up on her doorstep, Lisa is still trying to process what happened to him and how much her world has changed. This is an excellent study in to what Dean and Lisa's life might have been like shortly after his arrival at Lisa's. He is trying to adjust to a "normal" type of life and Lisa is trying to find ways in which she can help Dean and Ben screws up and it provides an interesting moment where Dean steps up and out of his pain to be a "dad". I really enjoyed this story and taking a peek into Lisa and Dean's life.
Driftwood (In Memory of 9/11) by ficwriter1966. This is a beautiful, heartwarming, heartwrenching story. Set on the day of the 9/11 disaster and where the Winchesters were at the time and how it all affected them. There are some wonderful tender moments with the boys and a neighbor who is intertwined in the tragedy, with John making a well-time and wonderful appearance. Absolutely loved, loved, loved this fic and highly recommend everyone read it. It had me in tears almost the entire way through.
Eleventh Hour by st_salieri. This is a tag to 3.01 In My Time of Dying. Author summary reads: John Winchester knows what he has to do. He just wishes his sons would understand it. This story is mostly a reflection of John's thoughts as he sits by Dean's bedside in the hospital. I've often wondered how some writers would interpret what may have been going on through his mind during that scene. This is one story that I was led to. So many of the thoughts that come from John seem so spot on as to explaining why he did what he did. If only Dean could hear this all from his dad or understand it. This has great insight into the scene and episode and I highly recommend it.
Hidden Depths by dante_s_hell. This is a Teen!Chester story. John is out on a hunt and Dean and Sam are left alone, but John does make an appearance at the end. And gotta say, I love her John. John is perceived in varying ways by SPN writers. Some I like, some I don't. In this story I feel that John's voice is perfect as to what I think he is and should be. The author summary reads: Poor grades and recalcitrant behavior do not endear Dean's teachers to him. However, one day Dean does something that has at least one teacher re-evaluating his opinion. This is also an outsider POV story and I really enjoyed this fic. Dean is in perfect big-brother mode in this story and he is also already the protector of the innocent and the badass we already know and love. Dean, as always, puts up walls so people can't get a good read on him, and as a teenager, the teachers read it as a good-for-nothing type of kid. When all Dean is doing is protecting himself from getting too close and attached because he knows that they will just be moving on in a couple of weeks. This is perfect Dean, Sam and John all the way around and I highly recommend you read it. It's just one of those stories that will bring a smile to your face. And maybe even a tear or two.
Invisible by K Hanna Korossy. This is a tag to 'Faith'. John did make it to Lawrence in time to see Dean and Sam confront the poltergeist and see their mother. This story is a reflection of John's thoughts as he sees Mary and what his boys might be thinking and feeling and why he can't see them at this time. I really liked this story and thought it was very touching and also loved her John voice.
Meet the Winchesters by breebree16. Summary: Lisa makes Dean take her to Bobby's for Christmas so she can meet the family. This is an AU starting Pre-Series after Dean's hookup with Lisa and discovering that Ben is Dean's kid. They decide to make a go of it as a family and Dean takes Lisa, still pregnant with Ben, to Bobby's over the Christmas holiday because she wants to meet his family. Already at this time Lisa is a strong, upright woman and a perfect match for Dean. They are sweet together and meeting the family, even John, she holds her own quite well. This is a very sweet, could-have-been, type of fic.
No Bravery by stillwaters01. Summary: In the wake of 2x21, Bobby watches Dean mourn, reflects on his boys, and muses on what's to come. Dean is mourning the death of Sam and this takes place before Dean forces Bobby's hand and gets him to leave. A lot of this fic are Bobby's thoughts on what is going on, what is going to happen and Bobby's feelings and thoughts about Dean and Sam. It is very bittersweet and thankfully, what is expected in this fic did not actually happen.
With a Little Help From My Friends by tifaching. I absolutely loved, loved, loved this fic. It is very bittersweet in many ways, but very heartwarming as well. I found myself basically in tears the entire read through. Author summary: History is littered with stories of brothers. This is one of them. Two brothers set out to save the world. The cost is high and the older brother is lost. It's said that the younger brother walks the country calling to him. From Maine to Kansas to Oregon he walks. In torment, looking, always looking. There are those that hunt things like him and they try, they do, but there are no bones to burn, no spells that will cast him out, no rituals that will ease his suffering. The only way to put his tormented spirit to rest lies in summoning his brother to take him home. We get to see several familiar characters in Sam's journey to find Dean as those who they have helped in the past band together to help bring the brothers back together again. It is a beautiful story and even thinking about it brings me to tears. If you haven't already read it, you need to now. You won't regret it!
Lastly, Wake Up and Fight by gaelicspirit. This is gaelic's newest fic and just recently published. It's one of her shorter fics, only 4 chapters, but well worth your time for a read. This takes place during Season 5. Sam is hurt bad on a hunt and Dean will have to go to extreme measures to save his brother. He will even have to confront his memories from Hell to help Sam. Chapter 3 is my favorite chapter and not wanting to spoil it here, it happens in the first several pages and once you read, you will know why it is my favorite chapter. There is a lot of Hurt!Dean and Hurt!Sam in this fic, ending with the comfort portion for Dean. Some good brother talk in the end and just overall excellentness. As all of her stories before this one, it is one to definitely read.
