Problem solved.
Well, a lot of people who have had inexplicable problems with the Droid's built-in IMAP client claimed that a free app called K-9 worked for them. I installed it, using the same settings, and it worked correctly the first time around. (Well...it crashed 3 times during setup, but once it was set up it was fine. Whaddya want, it's a beta)
The fact that it is named after the K-9 and uses him as the desktop icon is just a bonus. ^_^

In other news, I was so psyched about the Droid and Brütal Legend (which I played right before bed...bad idea) that I couldn't sleep. Like a kid at Christmas. I was thinking about Droid apps I could develop, and I had songs from the Brütal Legend soundtrack looping my head. It's obvious that the designer is a sincere metal fan, and one largely after my own heart. The soundtrack is very much the sort of stuff I would have chosen, plus some stuff I've never heard before and really dig.
