I went back to the gym yesterday to lift weights for the first time in over 2 weeks.
I decided to try an actual weightlifting program instead of my usual "do 150-200 push-ups and crunches, then do 3 sets of 6 reps of various arm and shoulder exercises, reducing weight as needed" three times a week, adding some additional back and shoulder stuff on "back and shoulders" day and leg exercises on leg day.
Since
haeddre recommended Body For Life in
my last post, I decided to try
this.
Doing more reps to start and then increasing weight as you go is a LOT different from starting with 6 reps and reducing weight as needed. I almost feel like I'm starting all over again. It's embarrassing how much less weight I start out with now. But...at the end of it all, damned if I didn't feel like I'd done something. I got that "pumped" feeling for the first time in a long, long time. I'm sore today, but in a good, "lets-you-know-you're-alive" kind of way instead of the constant dull ache and fatigue I felt before.
How much of this is due to the new workout and how much is due to the fact that I've rested for over 2 weeks, I don't know. But it's not like I was getting anywhere with the old way anymore.
It is a little hard giving up the tons of push-ups and sit-ups. I'm a little scared of giving that up since I worked so hard to get there. I'll bet I could work the sit-ups in, at least, without too much trouble...
