I haven't posted for a while, and this morning I finally caught up with my flist after 1 week of LJ-less vacation and then a week of getting caught up on life here in Milwaukee. *whew

What about a coat tree? There are a lot of sturdily built and affordable versions that you can get at Target, or would those distort the shapes of your coats?
As for the incoming mail, my parents found this three-compartment organizer that fits over the door to the laundry room (which opens into the kitchen, where their mail usually gets dumped). It works out well because it hangs at eye-level so you can always see if it's full. Mail is one of those things that gets to me though, I have a tendency to bring it in, stand at the island in the kitchen and sort it right there, tearing up credit card offers and junk mail and then tossing them right into the recycling bin along with unneeded envelopes from opened mail.
Those slippers look like something astronauts would wear. Your feet must be totally toasty in there.

That's definitely something I will look into. Half of the time I don't know what sorts of things exist because I don't actually go shopping or walk into stores very often. When I do, I tend to spend the whole day going to different stores all in one shot to make the most of the opportunity. We were actually in a Target yesterday, albeit briefly.
My main concern is the size and weight of our coats. Most of our outerwear (especially mine) consists of long coats and leather jackets, and they are both heavy and bulky.

Best of luck on the new start for the new year! It sounds like you're definitely off and running. Good luck with the furniture shopping - I don't know if you and Mrsmetallian have time, but estate sales can be an excellent source of good-quality furniture at pretty reasonable prices (at least in upstate New York). While these sales can be dicey for upholstered furniture, it takes something pretty extreme to damage wooden furniture other than in a way that you can immediately see on inspection. I tend to get a thrill going to sales like this because you never really know what you're going to find, and back home I rarely had something better to be doing on a Saturday morning than poring over older stuff

That would be a fun idea, but time would be an issue...I did end up buying the set (well, just the bed set and two chests of drawers - all we have room for) that we liked best yesterday. It turned out that it was not about to be discontinued (even though their printed materials and website only refer to it in the context of a clearance sale), but it was our solid first choice after shopping all day Saturday and I don't think I will manage to drag mrsmetallian out for another day of furniture shopping anytime soon.
Your parents sound a lot like mine - every time I go home, I find myself solving those problems for them. Point in fact: My mother had wanted to put up these Provencal blue chicken platesMy mom has been asking my dad to
