I have nothing to declare except my genius!

On Friday night I went and saw Ricky Gervais.  The show was taped for his HBO special (airing sometime in December), so that made things a little more exciting.  There were a few cameras scattered throughout the theater and a bunch of wires taped to the ground.  They actually filmed him two nights (my night and the night before that).  I'll watch in December to see if I can tell which parts are from the night I saw him and which are from the previous night, and if there is much of a difference.  I also want to watch to see if I can spot myself in the audience.  I was in the second row, so I think there's a chance that I could be on there.  Speaking of the second row, OMG, those seats were so freaking awesome!  If only I could sit in the second row for every show I attend.  I was so close to the stage and could see Ricky perfectly.  Seriously, throughout the show, I kept thinking about how awesome the seats were.

Todd Barry was the opening act.  I thought I really only knew him from that one episode of Flight of the Conchords that he was on, but looking at his IMDb page, I see that I've seen him in a few things.  He was funny, but unfortunately wasn't on for very long.  I think he did maybe 15 minutes.  I would have liked to have heard more from him, but I'm guessing they wanted to get Ricky out so they could get to the filming.   I kept getting distracted while he was up there though because staff were trying to fill the empty seats in the first few rows.  There were two empty seats right in front of me and right before Ricky came out, they had two random girls sit in them.  Lucky!  They probably were in the way back and then they got to move up to the front row.  About half way through Ricky's show, the two people who actually had those seats showed up, but they seemed confused that other people were sitting in them.  They left though and didn't fight for the seats.  The staff probably told them that they were out of luck for turning up so late and could sit in the back.

Before Ricky came out, he showed a short video with Louis C.K., where he talked about how the UK was running out of cum because Ricky consumed millions (or maybe it was billions) of gallons of it every day and America needed to help them out and donate some.  I didn't really find it funny, but luckily the show improved from there.  I can't really remember everything Ricky talked about, but I'll have the HBO special to remind me.  He seemed to mention penises a lot.  During the beginning, he talked about fat people, and I think I may have heard some of this material somewhere else.  He also talked about gay people and then gay animals and he had this book on animal homosexuality with weird pictures.  One picture showed a male dolphin sticking his penis in another male dolphin's blow hole. Yeah.  There was a bit about famous quotes, and at the end, he talked about 9/11.

The funniest part of the show for me was when he brought out a children's book that he actually owned as a child.  It was titled Noah and was about Noah's ark.  There was a large screen behind him and as he read/talked about each page, you were able to see it on the screen.  He mentioned that he showed Karl Pilkington one of the pages, and he thought the author was portraying God as gay.  Then as Ricky kept reading the book, it really did seem like God was gay.  He also talked about the absurdity of the whole story.  I can't really explain or describe it well, but it was really funny.

Part of me feels a little disappointed and like Ricky could have been funnier, but overall, I would say that it was a good show and I enjoyed myself.  I did cringe a lot, but I think you expect that with Ricky Gervais.  And if you want to check it out, you can!  Just watch it on HBO in December.
